2. Loew's Theatres at Alderwood Mall, Lynnwood, WA
Owner: General Growth Properties
Architect: Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr, & Huber, Inc.
Description: The fast-track construction of a 16-screen movie theater for Loew’s began with the placement of a massive underground foundation with pilings and pile caps up to 41-feet deep. To solve site condition constraints it was decided, with creative input from the construction team, to place a 92,000 sf, 230-space parking garage under the 90,000 sf theater. The building is raised structural steel with a decorative pattern of relief stucco. Patrons enter across a 6,000 foot raised plaza, which is fully landscaped with plants, lighting, and stone benches. The main entrance with its 35-foot ceiling is beautifully finished with custom made light fixtures, a complex lighting cloud installation, ornamental GFRC panels, and an intricately patterned cut-in sheet vinyl floor. The large concession area includes a cafeteria-style service and eating area. There are four main restrooms, office space and two each elevators and escalators.
